Murder for Two

The Philadelphia Theatre Company, housed in the Suzanne Roberts Theatre, Broad and Lombard Streets, is concluding its 40th Anniversary Season season with a zany, madcap musical murder mystery.  Murder for Two features a cast of two and will run through June 28. Don’t let the numbers fool you.  A murder mystery must have more than one suspect and this one has a multitude: Kyle Branzel plays all of them, each with a motive to kill the distinguished author who has been killed at his birthday party.  Ian Lowe portrays a beleaguered Officer Marcus Moscowicz who is determined to solve the murder and earn his detective’s badge.  Unfortunately, Marcus is a slipshod sleuth: but oh, can he play the piano!  At times joining him at the piano, at times nearly pushing him off the bench and at other times playing solo while Marcus sings one of his theories, Branzel is often at the piano in one of his persona.  You don’t always know which character he is portraying when he is at the piano but it matters not.  Kyle's repertoire is astounding and most of his many characters are easily discernible by his quick switch to a pair of glasses, a limp, a ballet pose, a deepening of the voice, or the character's walking on his knees wearing a baseball hat. Kyle Branzel is an extraordinarily talented actor. Each suspect Branzel portrays has his/her own voice and he never varies from it. He is light on his feet with his dance routines. Along with Ian Lowe he sings to move the story along and performs brilliantly at the piano.  Whodunit?  You’ll just have to come and see and be prepared for a wacky romp. The Hound of the Baskervilles

Damon Bonetti , Daniel Fredrick &
Dave Johnson

The Lantern Theater Company, located at St. Stephen’s Church, 10th and Ludlow Streets, is presenting a farcical adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles through June 28. Presented as a Commedia dell’Arte piece with fixed stereotypes such as supreme idiots and men with false bravado, this version of The Hound of the Baskervilles is a hoot. The three person cast of Damon Bonetti, as Holmes, Daniel Fredrick as Lord Baskerville and Dave Johnson as Watson play additional multiple roles and make lightning-fast costume changes before you can even blink an eye. Typically, a “zanni” character is not only an idiot but is always hungry. Dr. Watson fits this bill as, absurdly, he is never given anything to eat while those around him eat their fill. He is quite the bumbling investigator but manages to make shocking discoveries almost by accident.  According to Lantern’s artistic director Charles McMahon, “Dave Johnson has made a career out of playing idiots but has brought stupidity to a whole new level… (he is the) supreme dolt.” One might agree with this statement, but he is a lovable one, none-the-less. Damon Bonetti is quite the serious Holmes but we don’t see much of him in this role as he is busy entertaining us with a wide variety of preposterous persona. Daniel Fredrick is hysterical when he goes in and out of character…your laughter might produce tears! This play was written as a serious mystery.  It has been retrofitted as a nonsensical one. It is uproarious on every level. Thanks to the excellent work of lighting designer Drew Billiau, lights and their absence produce a sensation of movement as well as a passage of time. Sound designer Christopher Colucci and set designer Meghan Jones add to the eeriness which grounds The Hound of the Baskervilles to its original roots.  If you are familiar with the story, you will be excited with this new iteration.  If you are not familiar with the original, you may be surprised by the ending. In any event, you surely will  be delighted with the production. For more information or tickets, call 215-829-0395 or visit lanterntheater.org.

The Three Christs of Manhattan

Akeem Davis, Dan Hodge
Leah Walton &
Judith Lightfoot Clarke
Hold onto your seat belts…You’re in for a wild ride.  On the heels of Two Jews Walked Into A War, Seth Rozin has done it again with what is sure to be another smash hit!  The world premiere of The Three Christs of Manhattan is being produced by InterAct Theatre Company and will be appearing at the old Adrienne Theatre 2030 Sansom Street through June 21. The audience gets an inside view of a young Jewish psychiatrist’s first day of practice. Leah Walton portrays Dr. Posner with a naïve simplicity and brilliant comic timing. Her first three patients, surprisingly enough, all believe themselves to be Jesus Christ, returned to earth. One, Dan Hodge, appears in long straight hair, white robe and sandals. Moments after he leaves, the second patient, Akeem Davis, appears in dreadlocks espousing the need to help the poor and underprivileged. Dr. Posner has no chance to catch her breath after he leaves when her third patient arrives dressed in heels and a dress, claiming the way to salvation is forward thinking through wise investments. Dr. Posner has a plan to get all three together to try for a break-through with their illusions. Spoiler alert: She calls for the return of the Jesi !!!   Each of the actors is true to his character’s beliefs and as such, is very convincing in his role. As an atheist, Dr. Posner is not easily swayed. The play is brief. It runs only 80 minutes but there are enough laughs packed into this satiric piece for a show twice that length. What a wonderful way for InterAct to end its season. Come see The Three Christs of Manhattan and say goodbye to their home at the old Adrienne, as the theatre will be moving to a new theatre space at the Drake next year.  For more tickets or information about this great show with a surprising twist, call 215-568-8077 or visit online at www.InterActTheatre.org.
